Main Principles of Hair Loss Treatment

Visual image is of great importance in modern life as well as physical attractiveness and young appearance. Although hair loss doesn’t harm human health, it has negative impact on a person’s psychology and quality of life. Mainly women tend to have such reaction, though more and more men start to have it lately too. Male type baldness is comparatively normal physiological process and that’s why the majority of men get used to it, but some of them prefer active treatment. Some patients think that doctor doesn’t see their problem seriously, while sharing their hair loss problems with them. However it isn’t true, as far as hair loss influences a person’s quality of life, choosing effective treatment methods has a great importance. Individual approach of a doctor is also very important. Besides this, researching the hair loss causes is equally essential. Treatment requires complex approach.

MEDICAL TREATMENT

Minoxidil Topical

Minoxidil Topical _ Piperidine Enamine was initially registered as a medication for hyperthony, though studies soon revealed that the patients taking these patients were prone to hair growth increase. This was the way how Minox Spray was invented, which was first registered in 1988 in the USA to treat androgenic alopecia in men and since 1991 it has been used in women as well.

Minoxidil sulphate – Minox active metabolite Expands blood vessels and finally leads to proliferation of follicles. It stimulates follicle growth being in catagen stage, prolongs anagen stage and accelerates the process of transforming from telogen to anagen.

Minoxidil is used twice a day on the damaged area, 1 ml/g should be equally applied onto the area.

In order to get the first result it should be used for 6 month. In case if the usage is stopped hair loss starts again after 8-12 weeks.

5 Alpha Reductase Inhibitors: finasteride and dutasteride

Finasteride is 5 alfa reductase inhibitor which was initially invented to treat benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland. It has been registered in Europe since 1992. Peroral form of the preparate decreases dehydrotestosterone level in serum and on the hairy area of scalp and doesn’t decrease testosterone and other hormones level in blood. It lessen hair loss intensiveness and helps new hairs to grow. The preparation is for long term usage. Finasteride 1 ml a day for androgenic alopecia was registered in 1998.

Clinical researches showed minor signs of sexual dysfunction, though after stopping finasteride usage the mentioned sings disappear.

Topical Corticosteroids

  • It is mainly used for alopecia areata, front fibrous alopecia, red flat lichen, pseudopelade, Lupus erythematosus. Topical Corticosteroids can be used in the forms of cream, lotion, foam, ointment or shampoo. The duration of its usage depends on the disease process. It should be prescribed by a doctor.
  • Corticosteroid injection is used for alopecia areata, front fibrous alopecia, red flat lichen, pseudopelade, Lupus erythematosus and traction alopecia.

Generally Triamcinolone acetonide injections are used, concentration and the number of injections are decided by doctor.
